Some unbelievers will ask the impossible question, “Can God make a rock He cannot lift?” It is meant to be a trick question. If God cannot make a rock so heavy that He can’t lift it, then He is not omnipotent (all-powerful), they claim. If He can make a rock so big that He cannot pick it up then He is not omnipotent either because He isn’t powerful enough to lift it.
This is flawed logic. God can’t make the color red the color black while it is still red. He cannot make a married bachelor. He cannot make something that is hot, cold at the same time it is hot. He cannot make a five year old child a 30 year old man while he is still a five year old child. Many other impossibilities could be listed that would be grouped right along with this impossibility.
The fact that God cannot do these things does not mean He is not omnipotent. It means that they are not logical. Something that is literally impossible cannot be done no matter how much power one has. The question at hand is literally impossible.
So, can God make a rock He cannot lift? No, because the question is self-contradictory.
The question all unbelievers should be asking themselves is, “If God is good and I died today, would I be innocent or guilty?” The Bible tells us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). It also says that the punishment for our sin is eternal separation from Him in a place called hell (Romans 6:23). But God, in His love and mercy, provided a Way out! Jesus Christ lived the perfect life that none of us lived and willingly gave Himself on a cross to receive the punishment we all deserved! Now, all who repent of their sin and trust in Him, will be saved from that eternity away from Him! We can be saved!
Have you agreed with Holy God and come to the Lord Jesus Christ for forgiveness? If not, it’s not too late! Just hand your life and soul over to Him. Put all of your trust in Him.
